Asia is home to some of the world’s most diverse and intricate textile traditions.
From Indonesian batik to Indian block printing and the delicate embroideries of Central Asia, this course introduces traditional fabric design techniques from across the continent.
Each region has its own methods, motifs, and meanings, often linked to local history, religion, and climate.
Students explore the cultural symbolism of patterns and fabrics used in daily life, rituals, and traditional attire.
The course also investigates how styles and techniques were exchanged along historical trade routes, especially the Silk Road, contributing to the rich cross-cultural fabric of Asia.
Hands-on projects allow students to experiment with traditional methods such as hand printing, natural dyeing, or knotting.
They are encouraged to blend these with contemporary approaches to create innovative textile designs inspired by Asian heritage.
